Finding out what the current Sprint long distance rate is for your area online may be a little difficult. By the time that you read this, the company may have resolved the matter, but currently, their website leaves a lot to be desired. In order to compare plans or even order a FONCARD, you need to call a 1-800 number. Most of us are accustomed to being able to evaluate products and services, as well as order them online. Perhaps the company will resolve the problems with what their website has to offer. But, here’s some information that I was able to glean from other sources. Sprint Sense is one of the plans available from the company. The advertised cost for dialing direct from one state to another any day, any time is 10 cents per minute, which is more than what you could be paying with some of the other providers. For example, Verizon has plans with rates that are 8 or 9 cents per minute. MCI plans are even lower, but their recent merger with Verizon may change things, somewhat. Both companies offer the best rates when you sign up for packages that include local calling, too. If you live in certain states, the Sprint long distance rate may be more or less, when you are calling within that state, rather than from one state to another. Calling within the state can still incur a long distance charge. Apparently, it costs more money to do business in some states, which is why the rates vary. In Colorado and Iowa, for example, the in-state calling rates are 12 cents per minute. In Vermont and North Dakota, the cost is 15 cents per minute. But, to call within California, the cost is only 5 cents per minute. So, if you really want to compare “apples to apples”, you’ll need to look at a list of state rates. If most of your long-distance calling is from one state to another or internationally, you should be able to rely on the advertised rates of a dime per minute. The rates are even lower for calling cards, as low as 7 cents per minute, but there is a surcharge for using payphones and use of the card requires calling another number before you dial the number you wish to call. That’s too much trouble for a lot of people. Although there may be better services for calling within the United States, it is hard to beat the Sprint long distance rate for international calls, which may be as low as 5 cents per minute. Just remember that the rates are subject to change at any time.
