One symbol equals one sound. So for example, the sound "k" has a specific symbol for it. But, where it gets more challenging is that their third alphabet is called kanjis. Now they stole this from the Chinese, and the problem with that is each word has its own kanji. So it's not based on how the word sounds. So it forces you to learn an incredible amount of kanjis just to be able to read the newspaper. My Japanese teacher told me that you have to learn at least 1,500 kanjis to be able just to read the newspaper. So for example, the word dragon in Japanese, if you write it with the kanjis it is one symbol; one symbol that means dragon. But, if you talk about many dragons then it is another symbol. And when you look at it, it is a simplified version of the dragon symbol, but three times in the same kanji.
